That may sound blunt, but it’s the reality. While Lightspeed makes it possible to create a multilingual website, the backend has significant limitations. On the surface, everything may look fine, but problems arise when defining language-specific pages. Lightspeed doesn’t pass on which page variant belongs to which language. This is resolved by adding a hreflang tag to the source code, like this:

<link rel=“alternate” href=“http://www.example.com” hreflang=“en-us” /> <link rel=“alternate” href=“http://www.example.co.uk” hreflang=“en-gb” />

In this example:

  • The first hreflang tag is for English speakers in the United States.
  • The second is for English speakers in the United Kingdom.

Without proper hreflang implementation, Google will view these as duplicate English pages, which can confuse search engines and harm rankings.


Should I Switch to a New CMS?
